"To contribute to the progression of the human species duh," I replied.
"Wow," said Pheobe.
"Why? You can contribute in any way. You can contribute to the gene pool by procreating. You can contribute by just being a decent person," I qualified.
"That’s what I thought," Jack added. "I used to think like that; that life was about making a difference or something in the world. Maybe I’ve grown more cynical, but I think now that you don’t owe anything to anyone. You should just do what makes you happy."

He went on to talk about how, if he could, he would take a year off to get his pilot's license. But nobody would take you seriously if you just took a year off to do what most would call nothing. He knew he would lose money doing it. He knew it wouldn't further his "career." He had to put food on the table. We all did.
